Even where alcohol is fully legal, rules vary in ways that catch travelers off guard — Sweden and Iceland sell anything above a low strength only through state-run monopoly stores with limited hours, several countries ban retail sales entirely on election days, and Ramadan can bring temporary restrictions even in otherwise alcohol-friendly destinations.
Where alcohol is more restricted or effectively banned for visitors, hotel bars and licensed tourist venues are usually still an option — check with your accommodation before assuming there's nowhere to get a drink at all.
