Why baggage fees vary so much

Southwest is the outlier among major US carriers — every fare includes two free checked bags, unlike Delta, United, American, JetBlue, Alaska, and Hawaiian, which all charge for the first bag. Budget carriers (Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant, Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air) charge for every bag with no free allowance at all, and their weight limits are often tighter, with steep per-kilogram overage fees.

These are approximate, typical fees — airlines change baggage pricing frequently, so always confirm the exact current fee on the airline's website before booking, and add bags during booking rather than at the airport, where fees are almost always higher.
