Venice (VCE) has limited nonstop service from the US — Delta has run seasonal nonstop flights from JFK during the summer months in recent years, with a flight time of around 9.5 hours. Outside that seasonal window, most travelers connect through a major European hub such as Rome, Milan, Frankfurt, Paris, or Amsterdam on ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, or KLM, which typically adds several hours of total travel time.
Peak season (June–August) brings the highest fares, the thickest crowds around St. Mark's Square, and uncomfortable humidity — it's also close to acqua alta season in early autumn, when parts of the city can flood. Shoulder season (April–May and September–October) is widely recommended: fewer crowds, better light for photos, and lower fares. Winter (November–March, outside Carnevale in February) is the cheapest and quietest time to visit.
Because Venice has no dedicated low-cost transatlantic operator and most itineraries involve a connection, full-service carriers set the pricing here. Booking in the middle of your window — roughly a month out — generally gets you both a reasonable fare and better connection options than waiting until closer to departure.
4–6 weeks out on full-service carriers, or 3–5 weeks out on connecting itineraries with more fare flexibility. Since most routes to Venice connect, locking in a good layover matters too.
January–March (outside Carnevale) and November are cheapest. April–May and September–October balance good weather with lower fares than the crowded June–August peak.
